While a Jedi Initiate, Mace Windu has a hard time constructing his lightsaber at first. Unable to fit the components of the lightsaber together, Windu seeks help from the architect droid Huyang.

The droid reminds him that it is his usage of the Force that puts the pieces together, essentially making the lightsaber an extension of himself. With Huyang’s help, Windu is able to complete the construction of his lightsaber. Mace Windu’s lightsaber uses a distinct purple blade, as well as a specially designed hand grip. Later on, it gains an electrum finish, serving as an indicator of Windu’s status as a senior member of the Jedi High Council.
Early Usage
Following his trials as a youngling, Windu becomes a Jedi Padawan, serving as Jedi Master Cyslin Myr’s apprentice. While a Jedi Padawan, Windu uses his lightsaber during a mission to Mathas. He and Myr are sent to the planet to investigate and apprehend a man named Drooz, who was convincing the local populace that he could heal the sick in exchange for their devotion. The two Jedi confront Drooz, with Windu managing to defeat his guards. Although Drooz gains the upper hand at first, he loses it quickly when Windu uses the Force to defeat him. Afterwards, Myr orders Windu to lower his lightsaber, stating that Drooz needs to be tried in a court of law.
Rising Through The Ranks
Windu continues his training, now under the guidance of Yoda. He soon becomes a Jedi Master and eventually gains a seat on the Jedi High Council, following Jedi Master Katri’s untimely end during her mission to Raxus Secundus.

Larik, the planet’s Senator, testifies that Katri was ambushed. Despite Larik’s testimony, Dooku, another Jedi Master at the time, is unsatisfied with the explanation, and begins to conduct his own investigation. Windu, who ends up with Dooku on a mission assigned to them by the Jedi High Council, urges him not to stray from the council’s instructions, although Dooku pursues his investigation regardless. During the investigation, it is revealed that Larik’s guards were actually the ones who had ambushed Katri. This results in a skirmish between the two Jedi and the guards. Windu is forced to wield his lightsaber during the confrontation, using it to defeat the guards and their droid support. Windu and Dooku take the guards into custody, and return to Coruscant. Windu is later offered Katri’s seat on the Jedi High Council.
Mission to Oosalon
Eventually, Windu is sent along with several other Jedi on a mission to Oosalon, a planet in the Outer Rim. Windu allows himself to be taken by Guattako, the leader of an army on the planet, in order to find the location of his base of operations. His lightsaber is also taken from him, being dismantled and put in a box. Windu then communicates with his fellow Jedi through the Force, informing them of his location. After this, he uses the Force to reassemble his lightsaber, and proceeds to confront Guattako and his army. Windu and Guattako begin to duel, with the latter gaining the upper hand. However, Guattako is ultimately defeated by one of his own followers. Windu’s Jedi allies arrive shortly afterwards, and he reunites with them.
Clone Wars
During Windu’s time as a Jedi Master, the Clone Wars begins, with Republic and Separatist forces battling for control of the galaxy.

During the war, Windu uses his lightsaber extensively while fighting for the Republic. He uses it during the First Battle of Geonosis when leading a team of Jedi in an attempt to rescue Obi-Wan Kenobi, resulting in a confrontation between the Jedi and a large number of battle droids. During the battle, Windu uses his lightsaber when encountering Jango Fett, ultimately defeating him. Windu then leads the newly created clone army into battle against the droid army. In the subsequent years of the Clone Wars, Windu serves as a Jedi General, wielding his lightsaber on multiple occasions when leading clone troopers. Most notably, he wields it during the Battle of Ryloth and during the Battle of Malastare, two major conflicts of the Clone Wars. In both instances, the Republic emerges victorious.
Duel With Palpatine
Three years into the Clone Wars, the Jedi discover that the Republic’s leader, Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, is in fact Darth Sidious - the Dark Lord of the Sith whose goal is to take over the galaxy. Windu leads a group of Jedi to confront him, however his allies are quickly defeated by Palpatine in the ensuing lightsaber duel. After this, Windu duels with Palpatine alone, prevailing after ridding the Sith of his lightsaber. However, Anakin Skywalker soon arrives on the scene. Rather than joining forces with Windu, Anakin instead aids Palpatine in defeating him, bringing about an end to the Jedi Master.
