All About Darth Vader’s Lightsaber
Truly one of the most popular sabers within the Star Wars franchise, Darth Vader’s lightsaber is both iconic and unique. The lightsaber is present and wielded by Vader during some of the most impactful events of the original trilogy, such as during his duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi in A New Hope, and during the final events of Return of the Jedi. However, this lightsaber also has an in-depth backstory worth exploring.

Creation

Soon after the formation of the Galactic Empire, Vader is tasked by his master, Emperor Palpatine, to retrieve a kyber crystal from a Jedi to create a new Sith lightsaber. Vader then seeks out the Jedi Master Kirak Infil’a. Vader confronts and eventually defeats him, taking his lightsaber. Then, Vader impacts the kyber crystal in the lightsaber, compelling it to turn red.

At first, Darth Vader uses the Jedi’s hilt with the red kyber crystal in it. He uses it on several occasions, such as during a fight with the Grand Inquisitor, and during a duel with Jocasta Nu. However, during a mission to Cabarria, the hilt is destroyed.

After the destruction of the former Jedi’s hilt, Vader becomes committed to designing his own. During his journey to Coruscant, Vader constructs a new lightsaber to hold his kyber crystal. This is the lightsaber that becomes most well known. When Vader shows it to Palpatine, he is impressed with it.

Mon Cala Campaign

Around one year after the creation of the Galactic Empire, Darth Vader is tasked with tracking down a Jedi hiding on the ocean planet of Mon Cala. After landing on the planet, Vader and the Inquisitors face heavy resistance. The natives of the planet play a trick and flood the city streets. This forces Vader into the depths of the ocean.

Amidst the darkness of the ocean, Darth Vader uses his lightsaber as a light source and is able to escape the trench and rejoin his forces. Then, Vader is informed that the Jedi, Ferren Barr, and his apprentices, are nearby. Vader is also informed that Barr has joined forces with the King of Mon Cala. Vader eventually finds both the King and Jedi, defeating them both, causing the fall of Mon Cala.

Duel on Malachor

Darth Vader tracks down Ezra Bridger to under the surface of Malachor, inside a Sith temple. The opening of a Sith holocron by the Jedi leaves Vader confused, but after exchanging words, the two fight. However, Ezra is no match for Vader, with the Sith destroying his lightsaber.

Ahsoka Tano arrives just in time to save Ezra, confronting Vader. Vader asks her to join the Sith in finding the remaining Jedi, however she refuses. When Vader tells her that revenge is not the Jedi way, Tano tells him that she is no longer a Jedi. The two fight in an epic duel, with Ahsoka not knowing Vader’s true identity as her former master, Anakin, until the end. After learning this, she vows not to leave him again, however the temple begins to collapse around them while they continue to duel. Eventually, in the end, Vader is able to escape to the surface of the planet.

Battle of Scarif

During the Battle of Scarif, Vader manages to board the rebel command ship, Profundity, to retrieve stolen plans from the rebels.

After confronting them in a corridor, Vader ignites his lightsaber and defeats the group of rebels attempting to escape with the stolen plans. Although he defeats the group with ease, they are still able to get the plans aboard the Tantive IV, which quickly departs with them.

Duel With Obi-Wan

During the events of A New Hope, Obi-Wan Kenobi, along with Vader’s son Luke Skywalker, infiltrate the Empire’s new battle station. Vader, upon seeing his old master, confronts him and the two begin to duel with their lightsabers.

During their duel, Obi-Wan looks over to Luke, and lowers his defenses. He allows himself to be defeated by Vader, becoming one with the force.

Duel on Cloud City

Following his failed attempt to capture Luke Skywalker on Hoth, Vader sets a trap for him in Cloud City, on the planet of Bespin. He captures Han Solo and Leia Organa, hoping this will bring Luke to him. Luke rushes to Cloud City to help them, where he encounters Vader.

The two begin to duel, and after a long and eventful battle, they end up in Cloud City's reactor shaft, where Vader defeats Luke and reveals to him that he is his father. Vader then asks Luke to join him, however he refuses and manages to escape instead.

Battle of Endor

Darth Vader’s lightsaber is used during the Battle of Endor, when he ignites it to defend Emperor Palpatine from Luke Skywalker. Vader and Luke then begin to duel.

Luke then hides amongst the shadows of the throne room, with Vader trying to lure him out. Finally, Luke emerges and manages to defeat Vader, knocking him down and causing his lightsaber to fall down a reactor shaft. Now without his lightsaber, Vader still manages to defend his son against Palpatine, defeating the emperor and redeeming himself.
