All About the Darksaber
Drawing the attention of Star Wars fans for its unique aesthetic appeal, the Darksaber has proven to be an obsession for lore devotees since its inception into the franchise. When compared to other more colorful lightsabers, the Darksaber’s black blade makes it truly stand out. However, its physical appeal is not the only interesting thing about this saber. The Darksaber’s ancient and unique backstory makes it the focal point of the history of Mandalore.

Origins

The Darksaber was created by Tarre Vizsla, a Mandalorian that had been admitted into the Jedi Order. The Darksaber was created over a thousand years before the original trilogy’s events.

During the final days of the Old Republic, it played an important role in the Jedi-Mandalorian War. After its conclusion, the Darksaber remained in House Vizsla’s possession and was handed down through many generations before coming into Pre Vizsla’s possession.

Creation

Only one Darksaber was ever made. The Darksaber’s hilt is crafted from pure Beskar. Beskar is a very dense element, and is regarded as indestructible. The Mandalorians employ Beskar for almost everything, most notably in their armor. Beskar is one of the few substances that can resist strikes from a lightsaber.

Symbolism

The Darksaber was revered by the Mandalorians as a symbol of authority. According to Mandalorian tradition, gaining possession of the Darksaber required defeating its prior owner. Any claim to the Darksaber would be rejected if it had been obtained in another manner.

Pre Vizsla’s Ownership

During the time of the Clone Wars, the Darksaber was in the hands of Pre Vizsla, who was governor of Concordia. However, Obi-Wan Kenobi found his secret camp and revealed his true identity.

Vizsla battled Kenobi with the Darksaber while his warriors fled the scene. However, Vizsla was not able to stop Kenobi from escaping with Satine.

The Darksaber is seen again in lightsaber combat during a confrontation between Vizsla and Ahsoka Tano, also during the Clone Wars. This occurred after Ahsoka’s undercover identity as a Jedi was revealed. However, Tano managed to escape from Vizsla.

Maul’s Ownership

The Darksaber would eventually come into the hands of Darth Maul. After Maul escapes imprisonment at the hands of Vizsla, he seeks to take the planet of Mandalore for himself.

He confronts Vizsla and challenges him to a duel. In the ensuing battle, with Vizsla using the Darksaber, Maul is able to disarm and defeat him. Maul then takes ownership of the Darksaber, and with it, Mandalore.

However, not long after, Maul is confronted by his old master, Sidious. In another epic battle, Sidious defeats Maul and his brother, imprisoning Maul. However, Maul eventually escapes and takes back power on Mandalore.

Sabine Wren’s Ownership

During Rebels, the Darksaber comes under the control of Sabine Wren. It is used by her briefly while influenced by a nightsister spirit, against Ezra Bridger. However, Ezra destroys the altar from where the spirit emerged, also using the Darksaber. After this, Sabine takes up the Darksaber and departs with Kanan Jarrus and Ezra Bridger.

Sabine then uses the Darksaber to free her father from Imperial imprisonment, leading an expedition to Mandalore. She uses it to free her father from a convoy transporting him to Sundari.

Bo-Katan’s Ownership

Sabine Wren offers the Darksaber to Bo-Katan, the sister of the former duchess. Sabine believes that she should be in charge of the Mandalorian resistance against the Empire. Despite some reluctance, others help Bo-Katan embrace the idea.

However, Bo-Katan eventually loses control of the Darksaber. Although she leaves Mandalore, she is determined to eventually regain the Darksaber as well as the planet.

Gideon’s Ownership

After the Empire invades Mandalore, the Darksaber falls into the hands of Moff Gideon. Bo-Katan becomes aware of this, and begins searching him out. Also around this time, Gideon comes into conflict with Din Djarin, managing to take Grogu from him.

Djarin finds where Gideon is hiding Grogu, and defeats him. As a result, Djarin becomes the new owner of the Darksaber.

Din Djarin’s Ownership

After defeating Moff Gideon, Djarin attempts to give the Darksaber to Bo-Katan, who refuses it, saying it must be won. After this, Luke Skywalker arrives and takes Grogu to be trained.

After these events, Djarin is eventually challenged by Paz Vizsla, who views the Darksaber as rightfully his. Djarin narrowly defeats him. After being called to aid Boba Fett, Djarin uses the Darksaber again in the defense of Mos Espa.
