All About Obi-Wan's Lightsabers
With Obi-Wan Kenobi being one of the most important characters in Star Wars, his lightsabers have gained widespread recognition among fans everywhere. Obi-Wan uses three different lightsabers during his time as a Jedi. He constructs his first lightsaber while a Jedi Padawan, his second lightsaber while a Jedi Knight, and his third lightsaber while a Jedi Master. All of Obi-Wan’s lightsabers are used during major events in the franchise, and they all have their own backstories as well.

Obi-Wan’s First Lightsaber

Obi-Wan constructs his first lightsaber while a Jedi Padawan. He bases it off of the lightsaber of his mentor, Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn.

Obi-Wan’s first lightsaber includes a power cell surrounded by a notched hand grip. Obi-Wan uses the saber during his time as a Jedi Padawan, until losing it during his duel with Darth Maul on Naboo. After this, he builds himself a new lightsaber, this time while a Jedi Knight.

Obi-Wan’s Second Lightsaber

After losing his first lightsaber, and during his time as a Jedi Knight, Obi-Wan constructs a second lightsaber. His second lightsaber is almost exactly the same as his first one.

Obi-Wan’s second lightsaber contains a kyber crystal that emits a blue blade. While on a mission to Dallenor to confirm the discovery of a Jedi holocron, Obi-Wan uses the lightsaber to defend himself and his Padawan, Anakin Skywalker. He also uses the saber during a mission to Carnelion IV, and during a mission to rescue Yoda, although this turns out to be a test.

Separatist Crisis

Obi-Wan wields his second lightsaber during the events of the Separatist Crisis. He uses it during a confrontation with Zam Wesell on Coruscant, and during a skirmish with Jango Fett on Kamino. After following Jango Fett to Geonosis, Obi-Wan is taken in by Count Dooku, and his lightsaber is confiscated by Geonosians. During the First Battle of Geonosis, Obi-Wan uses a lightsaber given to him by a fellow Jedi Knight. Following these events, Obi-Wan builds his third lightsaber.

Obi-Wan’s Third Lightsaber

After the First Battle of Geonosis, and following his promotion to the rank of Jedi Master, Obi-Wan builds his third lightsaber.

The design of his third lightsaber is much different than that of his first two, showing his growth as a Jedi. However, like his first two, his third lightsaber also uses a blue blade.

Clone Wars

Obi-Wan uses the lightsaber during the Clone Wars in his capacity as a Jedi General. He uses it to duel the likes of Count Dooku, Asajj Ventress, and General Grievous.

He even uses it against Maul again, following his re-emergence. During his final duel with Grievous on Utapau, Obi-Wan loses the lightsaber, but is given it back by Commander Cody. He then uses the lightsaber during a duel with his former apprentice, Anakin, and then takes it with him into exile on Tatooine.

Into Exile

Obi-Wan brings his third lightsaber with him into exile on Tatooine, burying it in the desert alongside Anakin’s to avoid using it. During the early years of his exile, Obi-Wan meditates deeply on the Force, and forfeits the use of his lightsaber.

Aiding Leia

When Bail Organa asks Obi-Wan to leave Tatooine to help Leia Organa, he retrieves his lightsaber and uses it once more. He uses it during his mission to Daiyu to rescue Leia, as well as on Mapuzo, where he confronts Darth Vader. Obi-Wan is able to escape and uses the lightsaber again on Jabiim, as well as in another rematch with Vader, which he wins. After delivering Leia safely back to the Organas, Obi-Wan returns to Tatooine.

Continued Exile

After returning to Tatooine, Obi-Wan resumes his exile. He uses his lightsaber again on several occasions, such as during a confrontation with the Wookie Krrsantan, and during a final duel with Maul, in which he emerges victorious.

Final Duel With Vader

Obi-Wan’s exile on Tatooine ends after he leaves the planet with Luke Skywalker aboard Han Solo’s ship, the Millennium Falcon. The group manages to infiltrate the Galactic Empire’s new space station, where Obi-Wan encounters Darth Vader.

After exchanging words, the two begin to duel with their lightsabers. At the end of the duel, Obi-Wan, after seeing Luke, allows himself to be defeated by Vader, becoming one with the Force. Luke and his friends manage to escape, and Luke later bases his own lightsaber’s design off of that of Obi-Wan’s.
