All About Cal Kestis' Lightsaber
The lightsaber wielded by the Jedi Cal Kestis was popularized in the Fallen Order video game, quickly becoming one of the most recognizable lightsabers of the modern era. Cal Kestis is one of the most unique Jedi characters to have ever been introduced, with the Fallen Order video game making his many adventures playable by millions around the world. Also unique to this character, is the lightsaber he wields. Although customizable within the game, the lightsaber of Cal Kestis also boasts its own backstory based on lore.

Original Lightsaber

Cal Kestis creates his first lightsaber while a Jedi Padawan apprenticed under Jedi General Jaro Tapal. He uses this lightsaber to practice his skills while under the supervision of his Jedi Master.

While Cal is training, the Great Jedi Purge begins and the clone troopers turn on the two Jedi. Cal is forced to defend himself against the clone troopers, and loses his lightsaber in a turbolift shaft while trying to escape them. However, Jaro Tapal gives his lightsaber to Cal, which he later combines with Jedi Knight Cere Junda’s lightsaber to create a new one.

New Lightsaber

After the fall of the Jedi Order, Cal Kestis goes into hiding on Bracca, keeping Jaro Tapal’s lightsaber with him. However, his time in hiding ends after his ability to use the Force is revealed. As a result, he joins the crew of the Stinger Mantis, which comprises of the pilot Greez Dritus and the former Jedi Knight Cere Junda.

With the crew, and under Cere Junda’s direction, Cal embarks on a journey to acquire the holocron of Jedi Master Eno Cordova to rebuild the Jedi Order using its list of users of the Force. Cal continues to use Jaro Tapal’s lightsaber during his travels. However, while journeying, he accidently crushes the lightsaber, and as a result travels to Ilum to construct a new one. During the days of the Jedi Order, Ilum had been where the Jedi would retrieve kyber crystals to construct their lightsabers, something that Cal had experienced himself.

Journey to Ilum

On Ilum, Cal heads for the Jedi Temple while remembering his previous visit to the planet. He then travels into the Crystal Cave, in search of a kyber crystal. Although he eventually finds a crystal, it inexplicably breaks in half, causing Cal to lose hope.

However, thanks to his droid BD-1, Cal becomes determined once more, and begins using the two halves of the crystal to create a new lightsaber. For the hilt, he uses Jaro Tapal’s crushed lightsaber combined with Cere Junda’s lightsaber, making it double-bladed. However, the lightsaber is also capable of being split into two single-bladed lightsabers as well. During his escape from Ilum, Cal puts his new lightsaber to good use when encountering Imperial forces.

Duel on Dathomir

Cal and the crew of the Stinger Mantis travel to Dathomir to obtain an Astrium that can unlock the vault on Bogano, where Eno Cordova's holocron is located. There, he encounters Merrin, a native of the planet. To gain her trust, Cal gives her his lightsaber, which she then returns to him. After venturing deeper into the planet, Cal comes across Taron Malicos, a former Jedi Master. He asks Cal to join him, but is met with repeated refusal, and the two begin to duel. Malicos eventually gains the upper hand, but Merrin intervenes to help Cal. In the end, the pair are victorious and overwhelm Malicos. The two then leave the planet with the Astrium, and Merrin joins the crew of the Stinger Mantis.

Bogano Vault

Cal and the crew of the Stinger Mantis travel to Bogano to open the Zeffo vault and obtain Eno Cordova’s holocron. Facing resistance on the planet, Cal uses his lightsaber to defend himself. Cal and his droid BD-1 enter the vault and are able to find the holocron. However, before they can retrieve it, the Second Sister, who has been searching for Cal, interrupts them. After exchanging words, Cal and the Second Sister begin to duel. Although Cal initially has the upper hand, the Second Sister is able to take the holocron and escape the planet. Cal and BD-1 then leave the vault and make their way back to the Stinger Mantis.

Mission to Nur

The crew of the Stinger Mantis embark on a mission to the water moon of Nur to take back the holocron. During the mission, Cal uses his lightsaber to fend off Imperial forces upon entering Fortress Inquisitorius. He makes his way through the stronghold, eventually encountering the Second Sister, resulting in another duel between the two.

Using his lightsaber, Cal is able to emerge victorious. Cere Junda then attempts to reconcile with the Second Sister, who had once been her apprentice, Trilla Suduri. However, Darth Vader then appears. He advises Cal to surrender, but is met with refusal. Vader overpowers him, however Cal is able to escape briefly. Cal eventually faces Vader again, and ignites his lightsaber to defend himself. He is helped by Cere Junda, who distracts Vader. However, Vader overwhelms them both, so Cal uses the Force to break the facility’s glass, letting in water. By swimming to the surface, Cal is able to escape from Vader again with his lightsaber, the holocron, and Cere Junda. After this, he reunites with the crew of the Stinger Mantis. He then decides to destroy the holocron with his lightsaber, to prevent its information from falling into the hands of the Empire.
